TL;DR: The South Pacific tonic is a non-alcoholic cocktail built with Dry Shot Original Spirit, premium tonic water, sliced cucumber, and fresh mint. It takes 3 minutes to make and uses the botanical notes of noble kava root extract as the flavor foundation — the way a gin and tonic uses juniper. Zero alcohol. Kava's calming lift activates within 15–20 minutes. Serves one.
The Original's botanical backbone — cardamom, lemongrass, white pepper — opens up completely when you pour it over tonic. Add a few slices of cucumber and a torn mint sprig and it tastes like somewhere coastal and warm. Simple setup, complex result.
This is the kava equivalent of a gin and tonic — and it works for the same reason a gin and tonic works. Tonic's bitterness is the right foil for a botanical spirit. It sharpens the spice and opens the floral notes without adding sweetness. The cucumber presses out just enough moisture to pull the drink together without muddying it.
Is kava a good base for a non-alcoholic gin and tonic?
Kava has a natural botanical profile — specifically, The Original's notes of cardamom, lemongrass, and white pepper — that sits in similar territory to a dry, juniper-forward gin. It's not a replica, but it occupies the same space in a glass. For anyone who drinks gin for the botanicals rather than the buzz, this is the direct replacement.
Serves 1 · Prep 3 min · Glass Highball
What you need
- 2 oz Dry Shot Original Spirit
- 4 oz premium tonic water (Fever-Tree or equivalent)
- 3 thin slices English cucumber
- 3 fresh mint leaves
- Ice
- Cucumber ribbon to garnish
How to make it
- Add the cucumber slices to a highball glass. Press gently with the back of a spoon — not a full muddle, just enough to release.
- Fill the glass with ice.
- Pour the spirit over.
- Top with tonic. Stir once.
- Slap the mint leaves between your palms and drop them in. Garnish with a cucumber ribbon on the rim.
Note: Use a good tonic. Fever-Tree Indian Tonic or Mediterranean Tonic both work. The bitterness matters.
